November 26, 1987. A lone woman enters the historical city of Florence, Italy. She has nothing in her pockets save for a hand-stitched handkerchief, a smattering of Euros, and a small bottle of vitamins. More noticeable, however, is the protruding belly of the woman, as she is 37 weeks pregnant. She checks into the cheapest motel she can find, but is rushed to a hospital mere hours later as she goes into labor. In her pain-addled state, the young woman babbles about her reason for travelling from her native city of Amsterdam. Nothing she says makes any sense to the doctors or nurses, who simply attempt to calm her down rather than decipher her incoherent words. Nothing works on her, as she continues to ramble well into the following morning – when she finally gives birth to her child.

The newborn baby emerges completely healthy, but the mother dies shortly after due to complications. Since the woman doesn't have any form of identification on her person, there’s no way to know who to contact or what to name the child. So, the little bundle of joy is sent off to the adoption agency, where she stays for nearly a year before she is taken in by a new family: the Guerras. The local Florentine family had tried for several years to have their own child and, unsuccessful, take great pride in their newly child. They name their daughter Nerina because of her eyes, blue and clear as water.

While this sounds like the beginning of some happy life for young Nerina, the story straggles away from the path of perfection over the years. The Guerras were a fairly caring couple, but soon found that maybe there had been a reason they'd been unable to conceive a child of their own. Though they loved Nerina, they had difficulties showing affection towards her and did not wish to "waste their time" raising her. From the age of three to the age of eleven, Nerina was primarily looked after by a nanny or sometimes left with friends of her parents.

After this stage of her life, Nerina was shipped off to private boarding school since her parents had the money to spare. Even her schooling lacked permanence, however, as she attended different academies in France, Germany, Greece, and Spain for varying amounts of time. She excelled in her academics and made many friends, but would always be whisked away to a new school whenever she began to finally settle in. Still, this did little to deter Nerina from relishing the experience of school. Even at this young age, she knew that she wanted to go on to teach students after she was done being one herself.

So, when it came time to attend university, the young woman returned home to Italy to receive her higher education. Instead of her home town of Florence, she opted to move to the great capital of Rome. Once here, Nerina essentially cut off all ties with her parents, save for the occasional phone call and holiday or birthday card. Her parents of course had no problem with this arrangement, and would check in only to be sure that their adopted daughter had enough money to pay her tuition. By the time she had gone through several years of university, Nerina came out of it with her master's degree, teaching license, and a student teacher position at a nearby secondary school.

Despite being young, Nerina proved to be an excellent student teacher. After the year she spent student teaching, she was promoted and became a teacher of classical studies at the same school. Another year later, a colleague suggested that Nerina find a better school to teach at. They pointed her towards Unova Preparatory Academy in the neighboring country of Switzerland. With her sparkling credentials and positive recommendations, the young teacher somehow managed to snag a position teaching literature to the younger students of the seemingly prestigious school. Though she is new to the area, Nerina is already beginning to regret her transfer to Unova, as there seems to be something strange about the place...
